A guide to the best places to live in Bristol

Consider these tips to help you in your quest to find your home in Bristol

Whether you’re a freshman, sophomore, or about to graduate, wanting to move into a new home next year is always a daunting prospect. When choosing a house to live in for the entire academic year, you want to make sure you cover all aspects and find one that suits you.

To help you in your search, here is a (nearly) comprehensive guide to the best places to live as a student at the University of Bristol:

1. Clifton

Average rent: from £600-£1050 pppm

Living in Clifton will definitely help you romanticize your college experience. You’re so close to Clifton Village that you can go to the East Village Café for a coffee, and you can walk to campus in 20 minutes.

Living in Clifton means living close to both residential and student housing, meaning it won’t be difficult to find a quiet corner to live in, while still being within walking distance of the Triangle for your Wednesday night antics.

2. Redland

Average rental price: £725-£1100 ppcm

Like Clifton, Redland is a combination of student and residential housing, so you feel like you’re part of the city and not too far from campus. Redland is surrounded by green spaces including the Clifton Downs and Redland Green, so there’s plenty of space to get some fresh air when you want to take a break from studying.

Redland is also nicely situated between Gloucester Road, Whiteladies and the Triangle, so there are plenty of options to go to the pub, restaurant or club and still be able to walk home.

3. Kingsdown

Average rental price: from £650 – £900 ppcm

Having a place in Kingsdown means you’re closest to campus, you can live in the library (or at the White Bear) and you have easy access to the town center on foot if you feel like walking shopping, and the Triangle for a fun night out, as long as you don’t mind the hills.

Being just a stone’s throw from Cotham Hill, living in Kingsdown makes it easy to be part of Bristol’s independent cafe and shopping culture!

4. Bishopston

Average rental price: €600-€800 pppm

Bishopston is a little further away from Campus, but being just off Gloucester Road gives you plenty of access to the bustling street full of shops, pubs and restaurants. Gloucester Road is also known for its variety of charity shops, so it’s great to maintain a sustainable wardrobe and not break the bank as a student.

5. Horfield

Average rental price: from £500 – £800 ppcm

Despite being a little further away, Horfield is a great place to live if you’re looking for somewhere with a slightly lower rent than those closer to the centre. With easy bus links to the city center and campus, Horfield is a great way to save some money, and being so close to UWE it’s still an area with a lot of students, so luckily you don’t feel too far away from the city.

Living here also means you’re a lot closer to great green spaces like Stoke Park Estate and Horfield Common, making it a lot easier to get your daily dose of fresh air.

6. City center

Average rental price: from £750 – £1025 ppcm

If you’re looking for a bit more of city life, there are plenty of places in the city center. While these places may be more expensive, they provide a much more central lifestyle, being close to Cabot Circus, the Habourside and Castle Park. Despite the walk If you’re heading to Park Row to go to university, you’ll also have access to easy public transport to get around Bristol, including buses, trains and plenty of electric bikes and scooters.

Finding a student house always feels difficult, and especially if this is your first year looking for a house, you may have no idea where to start.

Here are some of the most popular agencies advertising student rentals, useful in starting your search:

Bristol SU rental

The SU has a great selection of good quality houses in all parts of Bristol, and they also have a link to register for alerts on the website. You can find it here. On November 21st they are hosting a housing fair where you can learn all about house hunting and essential information if you choose to go through their rentals.

Bristol Property Centre

With a wide range of properties they manage, they are said to provide good service, quick responses to tenants and quick solutions to problems. You can find them here.

CJ hole

Although they tend to manage properties more towards Bishopston and Horfield, CJ Hole has many properties on offer, as well as reviews that suggest they resolve issues quickly. There is a website here.

These are just a few examples; there are many more. Remember to do your research and check the houses thoroughly for any problems when viewing. You don’t want to run into any problems later!
