Gabriel Jesus was in the right place at the right time to score the equalizer and set up a comeback win over Brentford on Wednesday.
It was the Brazilian’s sixth goal in his last four appearances – and it was a real poacher’s effort, converting the opportunity after Thomas Partey’s shot was parried.
“That’s what it’s all about, me as nine,” he said afterwards. “Obviously I want to fall, I want to play, sometimes it’s not just my game to be there. But if I want to score goals, I have to be there. I have to wait on the ball for some tap-ins or like today, rebounds, so I’m happy with that.
“With my positions to always be there, at the right time and in the right place to try to score goals. So I was able to be in the right place and score, so I’m very happy with that.”
However, Gabby’s performance was about much more than just the goal. He had the scars of a tough encounter after which he was named player of the match. However, he said he enjoyed the physical side of the game.
“It’s the Eredivisie!” he smiled. “You have to compete. For me it is sometimes difficult to fight for the ball, long ball, but it is necessary. I just try, I always play there with tall guys. But that’s football sometimes, you know, if this happens and we win the match and I score a goal, it can happen every three days!
The goal also extended Gabby’s incredible record of never losing in a Premier League match in which he scored – which now stretches to 60 games.
“It’s a record, you know, but personally I don’t look at this,” he said. “I just want to keep winning and scoring and help the team and the club to always fight for the title there.
“I know it’s a long road. We have to look at ourselves and then of course we want the top of the league to drop points, but we have to look at ourselves and do our job like we did today.”
