Chris Columbus considers the McCallisters’ professions – and how they could possibly have made enough money to buy That house.

The famous Winnetka, Illinois, mansion in Home alone It has been the subject of speculation since the film was released in 1990. How could Kevin’s parents afford that house – and a big family trip to Paris around the holidays? Columbus, the director behind the iconic Christmas film, spoke furtherThe Hollywood Reporter‘S Awards Chatter podcast on December 24 about the decades-old issue of Kevin’s parents’ careers.

The actual house – that sold just before Christmas – has five bedrooms and six bathrooms and hits the market with an asking price of $5.25 million. In the first film, in which the house is central to the plot and characters, half of the robber duo the Wet Bandits, Harry (Joe Pesci), says he originally started working “on this street” for the chance to steal of the beautiful McCallister home.

The New York Times and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago have weighed on the high-paying jobs the McCallister parents had to have to afford the place, said Scott Feinberg, host of the podcast.

“We thought the mother at the time — because we were using fashion mannequins in the basement, I remember having a conversation — was a very successful fashion designer,” Columbus, 66, confirmed Catherine O’Hara’s character, Kate.

He continued, “I remember we thought she was an extremely successful fashion designer, which was probably one of the reasons they ended up in Paris.”

Filmgoers, however, are more intrigued by the father’s profession. Feinberg noted that a common assumption is that the father (Peter, played by John Heard) was involved in organized crime, which could be why his house was such a target.

However, Columbus debunked that theory.

“The father — based on (writer) John Hughes’ own experience — could have worked in advertising,” Columbus said. “There is no organized crime, even though there was a lot of organized crime in Chicago at the time.”

Recently, the movie star herself, Macaulay Culkinadmitted that he was I have viewed the house in the past.

“I felt like buying it — just for giggles,” the actor admitted earlier in December during a screening of the film at the Rosemont Theater outside Chicago, according to the New York Times.

But he never intended to move into the building himself. Instead, he said, he would turn it into something as iconic as the 1990 film: a “movie fun house” where people can recreate scenes like the one in which his character skidded down the stairs.
