The risk of rapid fire spread today, with finally favorable rain on the horizon

There is finally more than just dry weather and a risk of rapid fire spread this week! While the week starts off dry and windy today, allowing any fires to spread quickly, beneficial rain will fall later in the week. Parts of the lower Hudson Valley may even see the first scattered snowflakes of the season over the weekend!

Today will be warm for November with a mostly sunny afternoon, highs in the low 60s and scattered winds between 20 and 30 mph. Have the winter coat again tonight with lows in the 30s to low 40s.

Tomorrow will be dry with less wind, followed by a persistent chance of rain from Wednesday night to Thursday morning. Scattered showers may linger Thursday afternoon. It will also feel colder late in the week with highs in the 40s on Thursday for much of the weekend.

As far as snowflakes go this week, it probably won’t be much, but higher elevations and areas along and north of I-84 are likely to see some snow showers between Friday and Saturday. Otherwise, a mix of sun and cloud with some scattered rain showers is possible.

Overall, the weather pattern is likely to become more active in the coming weeks! Hopefully we can get more spells of wet weather which will slowly help alleviate the current severe drought we are in.

FIRE SPREAD RISK: Increased today as wind gusts increase to around 40 km/h. Open flames may not be used. Burn bans are in effect.

DRYING MONITOR: The entire lower Hudson Valley is in a “severe drought.”

TROPICS: Quiet at the moment.

PREDICTION:

TODAY: INCREASED FIRE SPREAD RISK – Mostly sunny this afternoon, after starting with more clouds this morning. This afternoon a little wind with northwesterly gusts between 20 and 30 km/h. This again creates an increased risk of fire spreading. Highs around 62 degrees.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear and chilly with a light breeze. At least about 40 degrees.

TUESDAY: Sun and clouds. Highs around 57 degrees. WIND: NW 5-25 km/h. Minimum temperature around 40 degrees.

WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. A passing rain shower is possible, but persistent rain usually falls around and after midnight. Highs around 58 degrees. WIND: N/E 5-10 mph. At least about 44 degrees.

THURSDAY: Favorable rain – Periods of rain in the morning and some showers possible in the afternoon. Rain totals will be about 0.5 to 1.5 inches and while this will help ongoing wildfire mitigation efforts and begin to make a small dent in the drought, it will not solve the problem. We will still need several periods of wet weather to further alleviate the severe drought. Highest temperature around 49 degrees. At least about 37 degrees.

FRIDAY: FIRST FLAKES FOR SOME? Sun and clouds with some scattered showers. Some of those rain showers at higher elevations, especially north of I-84, may mix with snowflakes! Maximum temperatures around 45 degrees. At least about 38 degrees.

SATURDAY: Sun and cloud with some scattered showers. Some of those rain showers at higher elevations, especially north of I-84, may mix with snowflakes. Highs around 49 degrees. At least about 38 degrees.

SUNDAY: Sun and clouds. Maximum around 50 degrees. Minimum 36 degrees.
