Bethany Hamilton defended her appearance on “The Masked Singer” just weeks after announcing the heartbreaking death of her 3-year-old nephew.
“We will all face hardships at some point in our lives, and I just wanted to encourage people to know that they can persevere and persevere, and that so much good and beauty can come from some of the most terrible things in life. The surfer – who lost her left arm in a shark attack when she was 13 years old – added that she was “grateful” for the opportunity to take part in season 12 of the Fox series.

The mother of four admitted that she had no professional singing experience and only sang in front of her family. She shares Micah, 3, Wesley, 6, Tobias, 9, and Alaya, born January 2023, with her husband, Adam Dirks.
“When I first got invited, I thought they were going to appoint me as a judge — I literally had no idea,” she told the outlet. “I sing to my children every day, but I wouldn’t say it is my gift and talent for life.”
Then she joked, “Maybe I’ll stick to surfing.”

Hamilton talked about her experience on the show, saying she “loved the challenge” and called her participation “so much fun.”
“I feel like I’m living a double life,” she said. “But I think my biggest goal right now is definitely raising my kids to be safe, confident, and able to overcome themselves.”
The athlete announced on October 19 that her cousin, Andrew, had died following a drowning incident.
