MSNBC political analyst Basil smile accused vice president Kamala Harris election loss over “deep-rooted issues” of “sexism and racism” in the country, insisting it is “not a democratic problem.”
Smikle joined MSNBC Ana Cabrera And José Diaz-Balart on Wednesday to discuss the former president Donald Trump’s victory. Smikle argued that the Democratic “coalition” is stale and “frayed,” but that there is also a problem with voters tolerating “sexism and racism.”
Smikle said:
“Well, a good portion of the American voter wanted to take back their country and we’ll soon see what that means. There are levels of sexism and racism that many people in this country are clearly willing to tolerate, which is also something that we may not have experienced – we may have woken up in the same country in a sense, but that becomes much clearer this morning. I would also say that there was more than a week, two weeks, three weeks of conversations about how black men weren’t doing their best. Black people have done their part and done everything they needed to do, including the Black women who fled, so this doesn’t address the point Mike Memoli made earlier. This is not necessarily a democratic problem, because it is not a problem that can be solved. be solved with a campaign. These are deep-rooted problems in our country that we absolutely must address.”
Smikle pushed back on what he called “finger pointing” by some Democrats, pointing to certain communities they say didn’t pass the vote sufficiently. Smikle argued that the bigger issue we need to focus on is Trump’s rhetoric, citing his recent insult against Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) where he failed himself calling her a name that “starts with a B” at one of his final campaign rallies.
“We’ve talked a lot over the last few weeks about who’s going to do their part and the people who need to do their part have done their part, but I don’t want to single anyone out,” he said. “What I do want to emphasize is the fact that there has been blatant racism and sexism in this campaign cycle. And my question is: what are we going to do about it?”
