Two ‘rare’ paintings by LS Lowry have sold for a total of almost £1.5 million.

A painting of Senhouse Street in Maryport, Cumbria, went under the hammer at Christie’s auction house and sold for £700,000 on Wednesday.

The artist’s second famous work – ‘Going to the Station’, set in Manchester – had a lower list price but sold for £750,000.

Laurence Stephen Lowry, who died in 1976, was known for his depictions of working-class life in the industrial parts of northern England.
