‘Voting is magical but also annoying’

When voters went to the polls on Election Day, celebrities show up at voting centers and posting selfies en masse with ‘I voted’ stickers. Some take it a step further, like Anne Hathaway, for example, who jumped on social media to encourage voters at colleges and universities – especially in Pennsylvania – to stay in line, all to the tune of her own rendition of Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘ Please Please please.”

“Hey everyone, I hear there’s crazy long lines on college campuses, and oh my god, thank you for coming out to vote,” she says before donning a pair of sunglasses and singing Carpenter’s hit, with modified lyrics. “And I just wanted to say if you’re on the line right now, please, please, stay on the line / Please, please, please, especially at UPenn and Temple, just bide your time / Voting is magical but also annoying / You been waiting so long, let’s not make it boring / Oh please, please, please hold the line.

As Hathaway does her part, the lyrics change one by one, Carpenter was involved in this year’s presidential election by encouraging people to register to vote. In fact, in 2024, she managed to engage more voters through HeadCount than any other artist, registering 35,814 new voters and engaging 263,087 voters through giveaways, in-person activations and video signage during her “Short n’ Sweet” arena tour .

Among celebrities appearing on Election Day, Paul Rudd made a surprise appearance to distribute water to students lining up to vote in Pennsylvania. “I just wanted to give people water,” Rudd told MSNBC. “They wait in line for a long time, and it’s great that all these young people are voting.”
