How a Mumbai man used his puppy to outsmart con man posing as a cop

A Mumbai man decided to turn the tables on a digital scammer by making clever use of his puppy. The hilarious moment was shared on Instagram, where a man answered a video call from a fraudster posing as from Mumbai’s Andheri East police station.

The video starts with the ‘police officer’ saying, ‘I’m calling from Andheri East police station’, before demanding that the man show his face to the camera. Instead of obeying, the man picks up his little puppy and holds him up to the camera. “Yes, lijiye, sir. Aagya main camera is same,” (Please, sir. I’m standing here in front of the camera), he says, holding the puppy closer to him.

The scammer, who initially posed as a police officer, is completely blindsided by the unexpected response. Realizing he is being fooled, he starts to smile and quickly turns his face away from the camera.

“Arey yeh raha most important. Arey, then there. Dikhraha hi? Arey nakli vardi,” (Here I am. Hey, officer. Can you see me? Oh, fake uniform) the man with the puppy continues, laughing at the increasingly awkward situation.

The scammer, clearly nervous, quickly turns off his camera and disconnects the connection. The caption of the video read, “Pretend you are Mumbai Police. Scam call went wrong.’

Digital capture is a type of scam in which fraudsters create a false sense of fear and panic by posing as law enforcement officials and coercing victims to make payments under the threat of a fake online investigation or arrest.

A few days ago, there was a Japanese man living in Bengaluru defrauded of Rs 35.5 lakh by cyber criminals posing as police officers in Mumbai. The scammer falsely accused him of involvement in a money laundering case and digitally arrested him, forcing him to make payments in various ways.

A Bengaluru for that techie lost Rs 11.8 crore in a “digital arrest” scam after fraudsters posing as police officers alleged that his Aadhaar data was being misused for money laundering.
