The Sioux City Public Library hosted their second “STEM Saturday” to teach kids how to code robots

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – As a way to spark curiosity in science, technology, engineering and math among the younger generation, the Sioux City Public Library hosted a STEM Saturday to teach coding in a fun way.

To connect different age groups, children aged three to seven took part in a coding story with ‘BeeBots’, taking children on an imaginative journey to help understand the beginnings of coding concepts. And for children aged eight to twelve, they had ‘Robo Wunderkind’, a program that uses building blocks to help children design and code their own moving robots.

“I actually like it when kids fail and then take a moment, regroup, and mentally examine, ‘what can I do better to achieve the desired outcome that I’m trying to achieve,’ and then regroup their code that they have developed. done, try again and have success,” said Adrienne Dunn, youth services manager.

Dunn said both activities came from the Iowa Governor’s Vote Coalition, which allowed the library to purchase the materials and provide training for staff. She also said these hands-on events are designed to develop thinking skills while bringing families together to learn something new.

“They’re things that I don’t think you think about, and then when you see people doing it and teaching them, it’s just fun to learn alongside them and see them grow and think in different ways that we don’t as we ‘We are home,’ says Alison Henderson, mother of two.

Henderson said the event is a great way for her two sons to meet new friends while experiencing something out-of-the-box.

If you want to experience the fun, the coding story time and Robo Wunderkind will be held on the Sioux City Public Library on the fourth Saturday of every month.
