These three improvements will make AirTag 2 much more useful

AirTag firmware update

According to BloombergApple is working on a second-generation version of its popular and affordable item tracker, the AirTagwhich initially debuted in 2021. Here’s everything we expect from Apple AirTag 2.

Upgrades

In one report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman a few weeks ago, AirTag 2, “progress has been made in production testing” and three major upgrades are expected:

  • Better reach
  • Improved wireless chip
  • More attention to privacy

Apple will do that allegedly introduce a new next-generation ultra-wideband chip AirTagwhich can increase the range by up to three times when searching accurately. This means you can track your AirTags from a distance of 30 to 90 meters, compared to just 10 to 30 meters with the current generation version. A newer wireless chip could also improve location accuracy in less densely populated areas.

In the past, people have used AirTags stalkand some have even customized AirTags switch off completely the built-in speaker, making it harder for Apple to make targeted users aware of a nearby speaker AirTag. Improvements in anti-stalking features would hopefully make it easier for targeted users to locate AirTags.

Release date

AirTag 2 is expected to be released in mid-2025 Bloomberg:

Apple is working on a new AirTag – codenamed B589 – that will be released around the middle of next year.

In the meantime, if you are considering buying the current generation AirTagthey are currently for sale, with a single AirTag available for $24, and a 4-pack for $69.99. With the 4-pack that’s about $18 each AirTag!
