The suspect in the “random” Christmas Eve shooting in Oxford, identified by the court as 29-year-old Malik Letroy Webb, was charged with a 19-count indictment, including murder on Saturday.

Webb, who comes from Genessee County is accused of shooting three people near Ray Road on Christmas Eve in Oxford, killing one, according to the Oakland County Sherriff’s Office. The shooting happened minutes away from Oxford High School, the site of a 2021 shooting that left four dead and seven injured.

Webb was released from prison in 2023 after serving five years and six months for weapons offenses. He was released two years short of his maximum sentence, despite facing another weapons charge while in prison. Webb was released on Jan. 1 of this year, according to the Oakland County 52-1 District Court in Novi.

Magistrate Cody R. Ellwanger, who presided over Webb’s arraignment, did not provide many details about the Christmas Eve shooting but did say he heard the details of the shooting in a sworn statement earlier in the day.

“The allegations I heard in the oath, well… to say they were heinous would be an understatement,” Ellwanger said.

Webb, who called the arraignment from a call room at the Oakland County Jail, pleaded not guilty and was instructed by counsel not to talk.

Webb was denied bond.

Webb ducked his head out of frame for much of the hearing, but he could be seen rocking back and forth. When he appeared in the frame, he cried.

According to witnesses at the scene, Webb emerged from a vehicle that crashed in a ditch near Ray Road. Several good Samaritans stopped their car to assist with the crash, and Webb began shooting, killing one and wounding two others.

On Friday, a witness — who requested anonymity due to safety concerns — told the Free Press that the man in the ditch, reportedly Webb, went from car to car shooting at people.

“We were very lucky,” said the witness. “I never saw him, I just heard everything and kept my distance.”

Webb’s next hearing is scheduled for Jan. 6 at 9 a.m. in Oakland County 52-3 District Court in Rochester Hills.
