Kumar Vishwas, a renowned poet and former AAP leader, has courted controversy with his recent comments on the interfaith marriage of film actor Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal. The couple married on June 23, 2024 in a civil ceremony under the Special Marriage Act. But his poetic comment added fuel to the ongoing controversy after the wedding took place.
Vishwas was once known for his romantic and social commentary on harmony and solidarity. But his poetic satire has created controversy among the people. Speaking at the Meerut Mahotsav on December 21, 2024, Vishwas made the controversial comment: “Teach your children the names of the sisters of Sita and the brothers of Ram. Let them listen to the Ramayana and teach them Geeta. Otherwise it should not be allowed to happen.” It may happen that the name of your house is Ramayana, but someone else takes away the Shri Lakshmi of your house”
His words led many to accuse him of indirectly targeting Sonakshi and her father, Shatrughan Sinha, without mentioning their names. Kumar Vishwas later defended that his statements were not aimed at Sonakshi Sinha and clarified that it was a reference to the names of his neighborhood where he lives in Ghaziabad.
The shift in Vishwas’s poetry has led his followers to raise questions. His comments, once about rebellion against hate, have now shifted to supporting a more divisive message, leaving many to wonder what has changed for the poet who once spoke so powerfully about national unity.
