Akatsi South: Armed robbery gang gets 125 years in prison

Ho (VR), December 24, GNA – A Ho Circuit Court in the Volta Region has convicted three persons for their respective roles in an armed robbery of Mr Makafui Atsu Kumordzi, the director of Makafui and Son’s Limited, a lotto company based in in Ayitikope in Akatsi South Municipality.

The convicts, Nzete Chukunhru Best, 28 years, Mark Billy Agbozo 31, also known as Teacher, and Ernest Sokpi Amevor, 32, popularly known as ‘Peace Maker’, were convicted by the court on charges of abetment to theft and conspiracy to commit crimes. namely theft and theft.

Convicts Agbozo and Sokpi Amevor are to serve 25 years of hard labor for two charges for each conviction, totaling 50 years each, which will run concurrently, while Nzete Chukunhru, the first suspect, was also given a 25-year prison sentence. forced labor for incitement to theft.

On Monday, December 23, the court, presided over by Mr. Felix Datsomor, a Judge of the Circuit Court, after a full trial, found the convicts guilty of all charges leveled against them. asked the court for leniency before their respective prison sentences were imposed.

According to facts available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Andrews Dodzi Adugu, a Senior State Counsel in the Volta Region Public Prosecution Service and Chief Prosecution Counsel, explained that Nzete Chukunhru is a Nigerian, who deals in second-hand clothing in Accra, while Agbozo and Sokpi Amevor are drivers and residents in Ehi near Agbozume.

He told the court that on May 29, 2021, at about 11:30 PM, while the complainant was sleeping at his residence in Ayitikope, the convicts, using a Daewoo taxi with registration number GE 3739-12, went to the residence of Mr Kumordzi .

The prosecutor said the team alighted Nzete Chukunhru on their way to serve as a spy, while the other accomplices in the company of six others climbed over the complainant’s fence wall and destroyed his door, gaining access to the living room.

He said it was all masked welding guns, metal bars and machetes. The suspects and their accomplices shot the complainant three times in the left thigh. At gunpoint, they stole the sum of GH₵160,000 and CFA francs worth GH₵640,000 and the sum of GH₵25,000 from Peace Lordeena Sedofia, wife of Mr Kumordzi, the amount totaling about GHC825,000.

The Public Prosecution Service stated that a report was subsequently filed with the police, after which Nzete Chukunhru was arrested in one fell swoop on November 26, 2021 in Accra.

He said that during interrogation, Nzete told the police that he had participated in a series of robberies, including the one involving the complainant in Ayitikope, and that he had led the police to arrest Agbozo, whom he claimed was the one who had driven them to the scene of the robbery. and also took part in the robbery.

The prosecution also revealed that Agbozo, who denied being part of the robbery, initially admitted to the crime and confessed that he had served as the gang’s driver at the scene of the attack, robbed the money and mingled with the group had divided.

Makafui and Son’s Company Limited suffered life-threatening attacks in the span of two years (2021-2022), with Dotsey Dogbatey, one of the company’s drivers, shot dead after returning from his daily lottery ticket collection rounds.

Efforts are being made to arrest the other accomplices.
