Bangladesh demands return of ex-PM Hasina from India amid US billion embezzlement probe

Bangladesh has told neighboring India that it wants former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to New Delhi in August, to return to the country for a “judicial trial”, the acting foreign ministry chief said on Monday.

“We have sent a verbal note to the Indian government stating that the Bangladesh government wants her (Hasina) back here for legal proceedings,” Touhid Hossain told reporters, referring to the diplomatic correspondence between the two countries.

Hossain did not elaborate on the legal process.

India’s foreign ministry and Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

“We confirm that we have today received a verbal note from the Bangladesh High Commission in connection with an extradition request. We have no comment on this matter at this time,” said the official spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

The head of Bangladesh’s interim government, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has demanded that India return Hasina so Bangladesh can try her for what she says are crimes against protesters and her opponents, and crimes she is accused of during her past tenure . 15 years.
