16-year-old fatally shot by employee during alleged robbery identified

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The Orleans Coroner’s Office has identified an armed robbery suspect shot by a store manager Tuesday evening as 16-year-old Cecil Batiz.

The incident happened at Sam’s Meat Market in the 8400 block of South I-10 Service Road around 7:50 p.m.

According to NOPD, Batiz and a second suspect, 18-year-old Teony Juarez, were attempting to rob the business at gunpoint when the manager opened fire, striking both suspects.

Batiz was transported to a local hospital but later died from his injuries.

The video shows Juarez running out of the store.

The NOPD arrest warrant affidavit alleges that as he left, he fired his gun. Fox 8 legal analyst Joe Raspanti said this could lead to a harsher sentence if he is convicted.

“It adds another five (years). “I believe this boy faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years if convicted,” he said.

Juarez is currently facing counts of:

  • Armed robbery
  • Armed robbery; use of a firearm
  • Aggravated assault with a firearm
  • Illegal use of weapons or dangerous aids

The affidavit also claims that an unknown woman helped Juarez get to University Medical Center on Canal Street after the shooting.

The unknown woman escorted him to the emergency room entrance, but then left.

Fox 8 asked NOPD if the person has been identified or if charges will be filed against her. A department spokesperson said there were no further updates.

Raspanti said she could face legal consequences.

“She could possibly be prosecuted for complicity in the shooting. Theoretically, she could also be charged as a director, although I don’t think they’ll go there. She could be criminally liable,” he said.

An Orleans Parish judge granted Juarez a $170,000 bond. If he drops out, he will be ordered to stay home and must wear an ankle monitor.

Matt Dennis, owner of ASAP Ankle Monitoring, said he expects Juarez will be monitored by his team if he goes out.

“If he ever leaves, there will be an immediate report to the court saying he left,” he said.

Fox 8 spoke briefly with the two workers who were held at gunpoint. They said they had had trouble sleeping but declined further interview.
