Lancashire’s salt marshes ‘could be regenerated’ by crunchy factory waste

Salt marshes not only help prevent nearby flooding, but also provide unique habitats for birds, fish and some rare plants.

The Our Future Coast project is led by Wyre Council and managed by Lancaster City Council with help from environmental group Morecambe Bay Partnership.

Joseph Earl, of the Morecambe Bay Partnership, said the new networks are “essentially trying to trap sediment and promote growth”.

He said the networks are environmentally friendly because “the crucial point is that they are biodegradable over a long period of time.”

Mr Earl said: “Salt marshes help absorb wave energy, they help reduce the risk of floods and storms, so the bigger picture is to try to restore the marsh and restore the safety net.”
