Arrested during encounter, suspect dies in custody

Lucknow: A robbery accused, who was injured in a police encounter in Jankipuram on October 22, died on Friday while receiving treatment at SGPGI.
An inquiry has been ordered into the death as per standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Accused Kamlesh Tiwari, who faced 42 cases of chain snatching and theft, was given medical attention after his arrest. According to ADCP (North) Jitendra Kumar Dubey, the injuries sustained during the encounter were not related to his death. “After his arrest, he was produced before a magistrate and underwent treatment for an illness,” Dubey said, adding that the police post-mortem examination report is expected. The incident that led to his arrest took place on October 22 around 9 pm when the crime branch and Jankipuram police conducted vehicle checking near the Bhitauli crossing.
Two scooter riders tried to flee after being stopped. One of them, later identified as Kamlesh, fired at police, prompting retaliatory fire. Kamlesh suffered a gunshot wound in his leg, while his accomplice managed to escape. He was immediately taken to the trauma center for treatment and subsequently lodged in Gosaiganj jail.
Kamlesh was known for targeting elderly citizens. One such incident involved the robbery of 62-year-old Shailbala, a resident of Jankipuram Sector-F, while she was walking with her granddaughter. The miscreants pretended to ask for directions before grabbing her chain and fleeing the scene.
The police handed over Tiwari’s body to his family after a post-mortem examination. His family has not made any accusations so far.
However, the circumstances surrounding his death are still under investigation, with authorities emphasizing transparency in the investigation.
