Robbery at R38m jewelry store: Wanted suspects arrested

TWO men, who robbed a Port Elizabeth jewelery store of approximately R38 million worth of goods, were recently arrested in the Folweni area during a joint crime intelligence operation.

Charnel Hattingh, Fidelity Services Group’s head of communications and marketing, said members of the Specialized Intervention Unit, together with the Port Elizabeth Organized Crime Unit and the eThekwini Infrastructure Task Team, acted on information received regarding the whereabouts of two wanted suspects in a business robbery in the Folweni and Umlazi areas.

“One of the suspects was found at his home and arrested for his involvement in the robbery of a jewelery store in which approximately R38 million worth of goods were stolen. He was detained in Umlazi Police cells and it was confirmed that he was involved in the robbery as the driver of the vehicle that traveled to Port Elizabeth to commit the offence,” she said.

The second suspect was also found in another home and arrested. CCTV footage positively linked him to the crime scene.

Hattingh said: “A search of the suspect’s homes led to the recovery of numerous glasses and sunglasses stolen from an optometrist during a recent robbery of a central business in Durban. Further investigation revealed that the suspect advertised these glasses and sunglasses on social media.”

She congratulated all involved in the successful joint operation for their great teamwork in tracking down the suspects.
