Luis Mey was sent to the Arizona Fall League to see if he was worth a 40-man spot with the Cincinnati Reds.
After six appearances, May has yet to allow a goal or point in the AFL.
Mey signed at the start of the 2018-2019 international signing period for just $50,000.
In April, while pitching for the High-A Dayton Dragons, Mey threw the fastest pitch in Day Air Ballpark history at 100 mph.
Has the pressure to possibly earn a place for 40 also reach Mey?
“No,” Mey told Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com. “They gave me the opportunity and I was going to go out there and show while I’m here and just keep doing what I know I have to do.”
The righthander struckout eight batters in 6 2/3 innings and, perhaps more importantly, walked only one batter.
“It is,” Mey said when asked if this is the best he has ever thrown in his career. “I have worked hard on my approach. This (fall) shows that the work is now paying off.”
Mey’s impressive fall has not gone unnoticed.
“He has risen to the challenges of late,” said Cincinnati farm director Jeremy Farrell. “He has been more consistent and competitive in the strike zone and is successfully attacking good hitters. With his presence on the mound and the way the ball comes out of his hand, the ability is there. He seems to be gaining confidence and it was fun to watch.”
The 23-year-old has thoroughly enjoyed closing games and wants to be like former Reds closer Aroldis Chapman.
“It’s super cool to know that you’re going to be in these types of situations,” Mey said about closing out games this fall. “I’m open to getting this spotlight everywhere. That’s my dream. I want to be like Aroldis Chapman, but he’s left-handed. I’m going to be my own kind. I will look like Luis Mey for a long time.”
