Construction is beginning on new affordable housing in northeast Calgary

An affordable housing project is being built in northeast Calgary.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place in Whitehorn on Friday morning.

Ground had been broken for the development of new affordable housing in northeast Calgry.

The Homespace Society Project will build temporary urban housing for 52 vulnerable families.

There will be two and three-bedroom apartments in seven buildings.

The units will be made available to families who are or are at risk of becoming homeless. They are rented at 30 percent below market price.

The development is part of the city’s housing strategy that the City Council approved in 2023, following a two-day public hearing where more than 100 Calgarians shared their housing concerns.
