The Chief’s biggest blind spot is also Patrick Mahomes, and that’s a huge problem

It wasn’t pretty for the Kansas City Chiefs despite being 7-0 and the last undefeated team in the N.F.L. Their track record would indicate that they have outpaced the competition, but that is far from the case. Although small, the two-time defending Super Bowl champions have holes that have become apparent throughout the season.

Kansas City recently made two splashy moves to address some of their needs. First of all, her acquired veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins of the Tennesee Titans. Then her landed edge rusher Josh Uche in a trade with the New England Patriots. However, it will be difficult for the Chiefs to close any hole on their roster before the league’s trade deadline on November 5. Yet they haven’t addressed perhaps their most glaring problem: the left tackle.

The Chiefs are known for having one of the best offensive lines in football. Nevertheless, the weakest link of the device is the blind spot protection. Wanya Morris is struggling to keep quarterback Patrick Mahomes upright. Kansas City’s operation and quest for a tri-state crumble without their franchise passer, making this a situation worth keeping an eye on.

Morris hasn’t played well this season, as evidenced by his 50.1 overall Pro Football Focus player grade. The second-year pro has been tough to watch, especially when he’s teamed up with elite blockers like Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith and Joe Thuney. He was noticeably bad in Kansas City’s Week 8 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, committing penalties and routinely allowing pressure.

Additionally, rookie tackle Kingsley Suamataia hasn’t done much (if at all) better when given the chance. While Morris has done nothing to show he’s the long-term solution, neither has Kansas City’s 2024 second-round pick. Meanwhile, their performances are taking a toll on Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense in general.

After seeing the Minnesota Vikings make a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars veteran left tackle Cam Robinsonthe Chiefs must be kidding themselves. In the midst of Morris/Suamataia’s woes, Kansas City had an opportunity to make an outside addition and shore up the most vulnerable spot along their offensive line.
