Indian cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues has become embroiled in controversy after her honorary three-year membership of Khar Gymkhana, one of the oldest clubs in Mumbai, was revoked. On October 20, club members voted to revoke her membership, claiming that her father, Ivan Rodrigues, was involved in religious activities and tried to convert others on club property. Committee member Shiv Malhotra said, “We are proud of her and she is bringing laurels for the country, but her father organized almost 35 meetings at the club in the hall which was booked for over a year.” The meetings were reportedly organized by Brother Manuel Ministries, which violated Principle 4A of the club’s constitution, which prohibits religious activities. Malhotra further stated, “Her father abused this privilege,” pointing out that the gym usually offers sports memberships and has renowned athletes such as PV Sindhu and Leander Paes. Club president Vivek Devnani confirmed the dismissal but rejected allegations of preferential treatment for Jemimah, suggesting the accusations were motivated by political motives ahead of the club’s upcoming elections. Jemimah’s family has yet to respond to the allegations, but the controversy highlights the convergence of sports, social values and religious activities.
