Unknown assailants set ablaze two Meitei houses in Nungkhal in Jiribam district of Manipur on Saturday evening, a day after suspected Kuki militants attacked Borobekera police station and set ablaze three Meitei houses.

Police said they along with CRPF jawans carried out a search operation in and around strategic areas of Jiribam district; however, no people were arrested and no weapons were confiscated. Nungkhal village is located approximately 25 km east of Jiribam district headquarters.

Police Superintendent Jiribam Robinson said that on Saturday around 10:30 p.m., unknown perpetrators set fire to two houses, one of them abandoned.

“District police and CRPF jawans rushed to the spot to control the situation and safely rescued the owner of one house, L. Samerendra. He is currently under the secure custody of Jiribam Police Station,” he said.

Samerendra told the media that around eight Hmar-speaking armed miscreants set fire to two houses built on his rubber farm in Nungkhal village.

“I employed some Bengali workers on my rubber farm and they stayed at home,” he said.

The SP stated that the district police along with CRPF jawans carried out a search operation in and around strategic areas of Jiribam district; however, no people were arrested and no weapons were confiscated. A case has been registered at Jiribam police station for further investigation.
