Sportsman Inn stopped serving food after the Covid lockdown because it was “hard to make any margin”.

But Fletcher said the event showed there’s still a place for beer establishments.

“There is still a good market for fun parties and a good time in the pub with a few pints and a packet of crisps.”

Fletcher said that while he hadn’t tried them all – “but I’ve eaten more chips in the last week than I’d like to admit” – his favorite flavor was curry from Golden Wonder chip shop.

“The secret to a really good chip is that the base chip has to be good, it has to be nice, crispy, not too greasy, and then the flavors have to be distinct.”

“We have some really interesting flavors of kimchi.

“But of the British flavors, the Kent crisps – oyster and vinegar flavors – were probably the most unusual.”

While he scoured the Internet for weirder flavors, neighboring businesses also joined in the festivities.

“Huddersfield is a small town, but it’s a nice place to set up a business because the people are close,” Fletcher said.

“There is a Middle Eastern supermarket across the street that was very helpful with Iranian chips, and the local Polish supermarket was able to stock us with some really interesting chips.”
