Donald Musselman, who was convicted of the murder of an Ottawa musician and pleaded guilty to killing another inmate while in custody, has died.

In a press release Wednesday, Correctional Services Canada (CSC) confirmed Musselman’s death while in custody at Joyceville Institution near Kingston, Ontario. CSC did not provide a cause of death or any additional information.

CSC said Musselman’s next of kin have been notified of his death. Spokesman Mike Shrider said both the department and the coroner’s office will investigate the circumstances of his death.

Musselman was 24 years old at the time of his death and had been serving a life sentence for second-degree murder since May.

In December 2023, he was found guilty of the shooting death of 42-year-old Ottawa musician Markland Campbell at the ByWard Market in 2019. Musselman was sentenced to life in prison for that crime.

In September, he pleaded guilty to the in-custody beating death of Zakaria Sheek-Hussein at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Center. This conviction added eight years to his sentence.
