The name of the man killed in an attack in Carlow town on Monday evening has been released locally.

Darren Quigley, 30, from New Oak Estate, was found with serious injuries after gardaí responded to an incident at a house on the same estate shortly after 11.40pm.

Mr Quigley was treated at the scene and taken to St. Peter’s General Hospital. Luke in Kilkenny, where he was later pronounced dead.

A short time later, a woman in her 30s was arrested during a further operation in Carlow town involving local police and the Armed Response Unit.

Sources confirmed the woman, who is also from Carlow, knew Quigley.

Garda sources said they were investigating whether the death was drug-related.

The scene of the incident was secured for forensic examination and a state pathologist was called.

A senior investigating officer, as well as a family liaison officer, was appointed to lead the investigation.

Gardaí say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation.

They are appealing for any witnesses, particularly those who have footage from cameras (including dash cams) in the New Oak Estate and nearby areas at the time of the incident, to contact Carlow Garda Station on 059-9136620, Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or at any Garda station.

Quigley is survived by his parents Ton and Michelle, his daughters Ava and Erica, and his brother Adam.

His death notice reads: “He will be sadly missed by his loving daughters, parents, brother, grandmother Agnieszka, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends.”

Condolences have appeared on the Internet after the tragic death.

One person said: “Tony and family, we offer our sincere condolences on your terrible loss. We are at a loss for words at this time, but we assure you that we are thinking of you all.”

Another wrote: “RIP Darren, condolences to all the Quigley family at this time.”

A third added: “Condolences to all the family and friends. Rest in peace.’
