A fire brigade official said that according to preliminary investigation, the entire building collapsed, trapping people beneath it.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar visited the site and took stock of the situation.

He said that of the 14 rescued, seven were in hospital.

Shivakumar said that the construction is illegal and strict action will be taken in this regard.

“I was told there was no permit and there was illegal activity going on there. We will take strict action against the owner, contractors and all persons (of the alleged building). We will ensure that decisions are taken across Bengaluru… Wherever such illegal constructions are carried out, we will stop them immediately. I will conduct an extensive survey on this subject,” he told reporters.

“We will stop all these illegal constructions and I will instruct the registrars not to accept transfer of such illegal properties which are not sanctioned under the schedule. We will take rigorous action against this,” added the Deputy Prime Minister. PTI AMP IJT
