Off-grid living often starts with finding a piece of land that you can shape to your specific needs.
Maybe you want that add a cabin or convert one old car to a new house. Maybe you need room for one series of solar panels to provide clean, free, renewable energy.
In addition to having enough space to live and an area dedicated to electricity supply, you may also want to become self-sufficient by grow your own food. But how much land do you need for that?
That was the question a Redditor asked the r/OffGrid community, and one user provided a helpful answer.
‘We live on half an acre’ the answer began. “The garden is 30’x50′, a few fruit trees, a grape arbor and some small raised beds. We have chickens, rabbits and two beehives with bees. If necessary, we breed meat chickens or other poultry. We also hunt and fish. We also forage, mainly nuts, berries and mushrooms. We grow or harvest about 70% of what we eat.”
That’s an impressive amount for a relatively small area. A half acre is approximately 21,000 square feet, or 2,000 square meters. Spatial blog provides some useful visual demonstrations, noting that an American football field without end zones fits on 2.2 hectares of land.
