The 113-year-old Patapur police station in Odisha’s Ganjam district has been selected by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) as one of the top three police stations in the country by 2024, PTI reported citing officials.
The police station inspector will be presented with the trophy by Home Minister Amit Shah at the Directors General of Police Convention to be held in Bhubaneswar from November 29 to December 1.
Joint Director and Conference Secretary, MHA Intelligence Bureau Samir S IIme has written a letter to Odisha Director General of Police YB Khurania over the selection of Patapur as the best police station in the country, officials said .
Stations are rated based on crime rates, research and infrastructure
The Ministry of Home Affairs ranks the police force annually and the stations are assessed based on more than 150 different parameters, such as crime rates, investigation and handling of cases, infrastructure and delivery of public services. About 20 percent of the total points are also based on citizen feedback about the police department, they said. The main goal of the ranking was to improve the quality of police work and make police stations friendlier.
“We are very happy as our police station is one of the top three police stations in the country. This could be possible due to the teamwork of the staff,” said SP (Ganjam), Suvendu Kumar Patra.
An MHA team had visited Patapur police station on September 28 to assess infrastructure facilities, Aska sub-divisional police officer Sanjay Kumar Mohapatra said. The team had also received feedback from the public on the community oversight and functioning of the station, officials said.
Besides performance in detection, disposal of various crimes, enforcement, steps taken to prevent crimes, implementation of Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System (CCTNS), the police station also has good infrastructure facilities such as women and children bureau, a child-friendly corner, toilets, fire safety measures and open gymnasium to the public.
