How Bellevue plans to reduce shoplifting during the holidays

The Bellevue Police Department has launched the “Stop the Lift” campaign as a way to address shoplifting during the holiday season through partnerships with local stores, community involvement and proactive measures.

This year, police will work with local shops in the city to reduce shoplifting cases, which have increased by around 9% compared to 2023.

“Retail theft is the most common crime in Bellevue, and the Bellevue Police Department is committed to working with local retailers to find solutions that provide a safer shopping environment for everyone,” said Bellevue Police Chief Wendell Shirley. “Suspects sometimes go to great lengths to commit shoplifting – even resorting to threats and violence. Bellevue has zero tolerance for this behavior.”

Police attribute a 90% drop in grand thefts at LuLuLemon in western Washington to holding accountable those who commit organized shoplifting.

With 37% of all crimes in Bellevue related to shoplifting, the Bellevue Police Department will focus on strengthening their relationships with the community and increasing their visibility in the area.

They plan to organize ‘Coffee with a Cop’ events in stores, actively engage with community members, take initiatives to prevent online crime and increase patrols in key areas such as Bellevue Square and Factoria Mall.

Police encourage residents of Bellevue and Puget Sound to take the following steps:

  • If you witness shoplifting, please contact store management

  • Never leave packages visible in your vehicle

  • Do not leave bags, purses or purses unattended

Police are asking residents to make their voices heard and call 911 if they see a theft happening at a business or a neighbor’s home.
