The Portuguese startup Unbabel has announced this a new translation service powered by artificial intelligence at the Web Summit technology conference in Lisbon. The translator, called Widn.AI, is based on Tower, the company’s own large language model, which enables AI translation in 32 languages. The company traditionally uses machine learning, a form of AI, and human editors to perform translations. “When we started at Unbabel ten years ago, AI was not yet at the stage it is today, so we were very focused on creating hybrid solutions that would combine AI and humans,” says Vasco Pedro, CEO of Unbabel , told CNBC. “But I think for the first time we believe that translation is now completely within the realm of AI capabilities, and that in the case of translation you can do a lot of things without needing humans.” He warned that in three years, people may no longer be needed for the translation.
