As a recent father of two, John Mulaney is dedicated to stay sober using his wife Olivia Munn.
In GQ’s Men of the Year cover story Starring the 42-year-old comedian, published online Tuesday, Mulaney and Munn shared some details about their family of four and what it took to get to a place where Mulaney says he’s “having the best time in life.” .
Although Mulaney’s star-studded intervention involve Fred Armisen, Nick Krol, Natasha Lyonne And Seth Meijers has become folklore, in the GQ piece Munn opened up about her part in Mulaney’s sobriety journey.
Munn told GQ that she staged an intervention for Mulaney when she was six months pregnant with their son. Malcolm Hiệp Mulaneywho is almost 3 years old. Together, the couple decided she would administer random drug tests – a practice they continue today, which boosts Mulaney’s confidence.
“It’s like a relief,” Mulaney said. “I like that that question isn’t even on her or anyone else’s mind. Something about peeing in that cup is like, I’m walking this walk. It gives me confidence.”

Mulaney was in rehab from December 2020 to February 2021, thanks in part to the intervention organized by his friends, with an addiction to cocaine, Adderall, Xanax, Klonopin and Percocet. Next month would mark four years of sobriety for the Emmy-winning “Baby Jcomedian, and he has been asked to be part of various interventions for other people, he told GQ.
“It was like watching a man in a tsunami,” Munn said of her partner’s recovery from addiction. “I was looking at someone who was just sober, at the edge of a cliff, and I didn’t know him well enough to help him.”
“In my head I’m thinking, I don’t really know what’s happening to this guy. It feels pretty shaky,” she says. “But then I saw him at the Troubadour and I said, ‘Man, he’s on fire. He’s just phenomenal.’ “
Expecting a baby boy was a bright spot for Mulaney at the time. Munn said, “That’s the only thing that made him seem light and happy. I remember him being very excited to tell his parents.”

Years after first meeting at Meyers’ wedding in 2013, Munn and Mulaney reconnected in 2021, when Mulaney was looking for leads on a place to live in New York after leaving rehab.
“It wasn’t anything close to ‘dating,’” Munn explained to GQ. “I barely knew him.”
When they found out Munn was pregnant, she assumed they would co-parent their son: “It wasn’t necessarily ‘We’re going to get married and live together’ or anything like that, but it was ‘I’ll do it.’ involved in some way,” she said. Two months before Malcolm was born, the two decided to raise him together.
