Riot police attacked with fireworks in Edinburgh

In another, a gang was seen hurling fireworks at a shop believed to be Sugar and Treats on Craigour Drive.

In Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, police said a 33-year-old male pedestrian was hit by a van driven by a group setting off fireworks at a skate park before fleeing the scene.

Pockets of Glasgow also saw disorder, with groups attacking the fire brigade. No injuries have been reported.

‘Excellent courage’

Asst Chief Const Tim Mairs, gold commander for Operation Moonbeam, praised the “extraordinary bravery” of first responders “who put themselves at risk to keep communities safe”.

He added: “Their actions ensured that some of the challenging scenes we witnessed this year did not escalate into mass disorder, on the scale of what we witnessed last year.

“Nonetheless, the level of violence and aggression faced by police, fire and ambulance crews in some areas was completely unacceptable and a significant investigation is now underway to identify and bring all those involved to justice.”
