Exercise seriously
The 2024 NFL trade deadline has arrived, marking a crucial decision day for the entire league.
With the cutoff looming Tuesday at 4:00 PM ET, teams have one last chance to make a major in-season shakeup, whether that’s making a splash for an established veteran or sending one to increase their draft capital or increase their salary cap improvement. prospects. Several franchises have already benefited by signing deals for household names, and more could follow in the coming hours.
USA TODAY Sports will provide live updates on the latest news, rumors and deals throughout Tuesday, so check back throughout the day for more updates.
The Washington Commanders are among the few teams at the top of the standings that have yet to make a significant move at the trade deadline.
But that could still change, like CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reports that the Commanders have emerged as a “real contender” for New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore. The Kansas City Chiefs are also in the picture, Jones said.
The four-time Pro Bowl selection would shore up one of Washington’s biggest positional weaknesses. Opposing passer ratings have a 103.9 rating so far this season against the Commanders defense, which ranks 28th in the NFL.
With three transactions on the books Tuesday, it’s time to look at which players could still be candidates to be moved.
- Azeez Ojulari, OLB, New York Giants: He’s coming on strong with five sacks in his last four games. But if Za’Darius Smith’s trade to the Detroit Lions has opened up the market for pass rushers, will the potential return be enough to force GM Joe Schoen to make a deal?
- Dalvin Tomlinson, DT, Cleveland Browns: He and fellow defensive tackle Shelby Harris would certainly make sense to be the next veterans cut by a team that has clearly indicated its interest in taking the long view.
- Arden Key, OLB, Tennessee Titans: Like the Browns, the Titans have made it clear they will look to move established players who draw interest elsewhere. Key and defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day could be on the radar for teams looking to strengthen their front.
After all, Jerry Jones had a move up his sleeve.
The Dallas Cowboys agreed to acquire wide receiver Jonathan Mingo of the Carolina Panthers, who sent a fourth-round pick while receiving a seventh-round pick, a person with knowledge of the deal told USA TODAY Sports’ Tyler Dragon. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade was not yet official.
NFL Network was first to report the move.
Prior to the deal, Jones said during an interview with 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday that the team brought in a receiver that the team really liked during the draft process.
Mingo, 23, was a second-round pick out of Mississippi in 2023. He has struggled to make his mark amid the Panthers’ broader offensive struggles, catching just 43 of 85 targets in his rookie campaign. He has just 12 catches for 121 yards in nine games this year.
The acquisition of the Cowboys comes amid serious injuries on offense for the 3-5 team. Quarterback Dak Prescott will likely be placed on injured reserve and will miss at least four games because of his hamstring injury, Jones said Tuesday. Top wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is also dealing with a shoulder injury.
How did the Cowboys do in our trade classes?? Look away, Dallas fans.
The Cincinnati Bengals have added depth in the backfield as they prepare for a potential late-season run.
The Bengals are acquiring Running back Khalil Herbert from the Chicago Bears in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick in 2025, the Bears announced.
The Bengals faced uncertain prospects for running back Chase Brown after Zack Moss was sidelined indefinitely by a neck injury that kept him out of Sunday’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Moss 74 has racked up 242 yards and two touchdowns so far this season.
Herbert, 26, has been a healthy scratch in the last two games for the Bears. He has just eight carries for 16 yards this season, while starter D’Andre Swift and backup Roschon Johnson have done the bulk of the work. However, last season he rushed for 611 yards, averaging 4.6 yards per carry.
The Detroit Lions finally have their fill-in pass rusher.
According to multiple reports, the team acquired Za’Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Smith and a 2026 seventh-round draft pick will end up with the Lions, who in turn will receive a 2025 fifth-round draft pick and a 2026 sixth-round draft pick.
Lions coach Dan Campbell had acknowledged for weeks that the team was looking defensively for a replacement for Pro Bowl selection Aidan Hutchinson, who suffered a broken tibia and fibula against the Dallas Cowboys.
“I don’t think it’s entirely up to us,” Campbell said Monday. “I can tell you we’re trying, (Lions general manager) Brad (Holmes is doing that too), and we’ve looked at everything, we really have. We’ve been making a lot of calls and he’s working on it, so we’ll see. We still have a little time here. We still have until tomorrow night, so we’ll see what happens.”
Smith has five sacks in nine games so far this season.
While the talent pool has thinned out significantly in recent weeks, there are still some intriguing players at the top of our rankings:
- 1. Azeez Ojulari, OLB, New York Giants
- 2. Za’Darius Smith, DE, Cleveland Browns
- 3. Jonathan Jones, CB, New England Patriots

The 2024 NFL Trade Deadline is Tuesday at 4:00 PM ET.
The shutdown comes midway through the season, when NFL owners voted in March to move the league back a week from its traditional spot on the league calendar. After Tuesday, teams cannot officially make trades until the start of the new league year in March, although they can make unofficial deals with each other after the season.
