If you don’t know somehow, Election day is next week. And because of the structure of the American voting system, especially the Electoral College, not every American vote has the same meaning when it comes to electing a president.
Personal finance company WalletHub just released a study ranking every U.S. state based on the amount of power voters in each state will have in the upcoming election.
And Florida, that is is not considered a swing state in the upcoming electionsranked in the top 10 states with the most powerful voters. Here’s where Florida ranks in WalletHub’s top 10 and why.
In which US states do voters have the most power?
To find the states where voters have the most power, WalletHub compared the relative influence of voters in both presidential and Senate races. To compare each state, the study calculated a “Voter Power Score” for each state and each type of election.
“In our calculations, we only counted the population aged 18 years or older to represent the electorate,” the study said.
“However, we could not take into account the limited number of state laws that allow the 17-year-old population to vote and/or prevent prisoners or felons from doing so.”
Here’s how WalletHub calculated its “Voter Power Score”:
-
Presidential election power score: ((win probability score x number of voters) / total population aged 18 and over) x 1,000,000
-
Senate Elections Voter Power Score: ((win probability score x number of senators) / total population aged 18 and over) x 1,000,000
According to the study, Nevada, which is considered a swing state in the upcoming presidential elections, is the state with the most powerful voters in the US.
“The top five states where residents’ votes will have the biggest impact in the 2024 election are all hotly contested battleground states: Nevada, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona and Wisconsin,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said in the study.
“If you live in one of these states, you can literally control the fate of the election.”
