Donald Trump will be sworn in before him historic second term as president on January 20, 2025.
That day is the official presidential inauguration day, and while it is not a public holiday, most government agencies and businesses will be closed.

In the past, presidential inaugurations have only taken place three times on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and only once was there a swearing-in ceremony. They were all inaugurations for the second term.
In 1985, Ronald Reagan was sworn in on Sunday, January 20, and Inauguration Day events took place on Monday, January 21. In 1983, Reagan ordered Martin Luther King Jr. Day to celebrate the third Monday in January.
That Sunday-Monday alignment happened again in 2013 for Barack Obama’s second term.
Bill Clinton is the only president to follow Martin Luther King Jr. Day is sworn in, with his second term beginning on Monday, January 20, 1997.
What’s open on Inauguration Day?
Because Donald Trump’s Inauguration Day falls on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, there will be some changes to business and government opening hours.
MLK Day is considered one federal holidayand as such the big banks – Bank of America, Capital One, Citibank, PNC, Wells Fargo and Truist – consider MLK Day a holiday and will be closed.
All federal and state courts and non-essential services will also be closed on January 20.
FedEx will be open on MLK Day and will deliver packages as normally scheduled.
All United States Postal Service locations are closed on MLK Day. Regular post office hours and mail delivery will resume on Tuesday, January 21.
UPS is also closed on MLK Day and will not deliver packages.
All non-essential government employees should be off work on MLK Day, and it is up to the discretion of individual companies whether to give employees MLK Day. So check your company’s policy.
Most retail locations and fast food restaurants are open on MLK Day.
