Grateful for Sasco: Entertainer praised for being a positive force in dancehall for 25 years

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Agent Sasco was lauded Sunday night as the dancehall artiste celebrated his 25th anniversary in music with his sold-out Grateful concert at the UWI Mona Bowl.

A downpour wasn’t enough to stop fans from coming to give Sasco the proverbial flowers for his contribution to the entertainment industry.

The evening had all the elements of a quality production: good music, lively stage presentation of performers, emotional tributes and celebration of family and friendship. From the numerous guest appearances to the tear-jerking renditions of popular singles, customers undoubtedly got their money’s worth.

“We are literally on the banks of the Hope River and this means a lot to me. Mi deh home this morning a train fi nuh roar mest yah innu and mi ago tryna keep it that way,” the man of the moment declared early during his solid set.

Intermittently fighting back tears, the entertainer reflected on his 25-year journey in music and said he named the concert Grateful because that was the overwhelming emotion he felt as he entered this milestone year of his career. He said the efforts of the fans who braved the bad weather was the icing on the cake for his celebrations as it was a testament to their love and admiration.

“As much as the rain is falling, if this isn’t a show of gratitude, I don’t know what is,” he said, thanking fans for staying put despite the showers.

“People, I go backstage and I see the rain and I say Jah Jah. I try to be optimistic and tell myself, I’m grateful, but I’m lying, I’m weak in my chair,” he shared. “But my wife turns to me and looks into my eyes and says memba and you say grateful. Everything ago was successful. People just can’t thank unu enough, fi deh yah.”

The entertainer who graced the stage minutes past 11 after showers caused a nearly two-hour delay in the show’s scheduled start time, opened his performance on a high with a performance of Blur next to Romain Virgo. The pair got the crowd into a frenzy as they walked across the slippery stage singing in the rain.

He said the turnout despite the rain is a sign that Sasco has paid his dues in the music field and is now reaping the rewards of his hard work.

“Agent Sasco is someone I have looked up to since day one, even before I knew him personally, not only because of the quality music he makes, but also because of the lifestyle. He is definitely someone I emulate a lot and I wanted to be just like him,” Virgo said. “So to stand here tonight and see him put on something so huge and watch the rain fall and no one leave just shows the love and respect that everyone has for him. It was just a blessing to be here and perform a song that we created together.

The love and adoration of his musical family continued to pour into Agent Sasco, as one artist after another praised him for sticking to his morals in a cutthroat industry.

“Twenty-five years inna music anuh easy supmn and yuh gi we music weh clean and pure and positive,” Lila Ike said as she paused her performance of their collaboration. Everything and everythingto sing Sasco’s praises.

Bounty Killer also had only words of affirmation for Sasco as he told the youngsters to follow in his footsteps.

“Unu looks great,” he said. “Who has lost and does not know any way, pay attention to the leader.”

Declaring Sasco future Prime Minister material, Spragga Benz also fought back tears as he recalled the deejay’s 25-year journey.

“You see, the first time I called him through the Polo Club, some people made a gwaan like they were playing stiff. You know those kind of people who want to prove you? But look, 25 years. He never harmed anyone, he never hurt anyone, he never did anything wrong,” Spragga Benz said.

“And remember, I had to say it to unu innu… Prime Minister Campbell first,” he continued as the two performed a slew of hits from each other’s prolific catalog.

Sasco emphasized that as grateful as he is for reaching the 25-year milestone in his professional career, he is even more grateful for the talented entertainers he met along the way who have now become family.

“Yes, I am grateful for my 25 years, but one of the things I am most grateful for is the good people I have met along this journey in music,” he said, thanking all his guest artists for make the evening a thunderous sound. success.
